Why Wing Chun?
For people wondering why Wing Chun Kungfu is so prominently on this website and no other type of kungfu (yet), I can give you four reasons:
1) Bacause I've been practicing, reading a lot about and treating the art as a way of (my) life since 1998. "Classical Ving Tsun" in Victor Kan Wah Chit's school for three years, two years in Wang Kiu's Modern Wing Chun school in Belgium and four years the Foshan Wing Chun forms of Peng Nan's school in China. Currently I am part of the Hong Kong Wing Chun family of Donald Mak Wing Chun Institute, which is of the Chow Tze Chuen lineage. The latter was one of the early students from Yip Man.
2) The art reflects all what "immortal" traditional kungfu stands for, since it is developed out of the most scientifically efficient moves distilled from Shoalin kungfu in the 17-18th century, as a secret weapon against the Manchu invaders rule during the Qin Dynasty. Still known as "Fist of the Elders".
3) Kungfu lost a lot of its roots during the 20th century because of communist reforms. Only five traditional kungfu styles survived, two in the North; Baji, Bagua and three in the South; Hung Gar, Choy Lay Fut and Wing Chun. And it wouldn't be wise to write about something you know little about..., so Wing Chun is my obvious first choice for martial arts on this website.
4) Bruce Lee is the pioneer in kungfu publicity, although Jeet Kun Do is his own developed art and his movies are just show for entertainment, he gained his firm basis from Wing Chun. After all, for most of the non-Chinese in the world Bruce Lee is the icon of kungfu, the one who made kungfu known throughout the world. It is good to know what kind of kungfu gave the space to a talented person as Lee to become a world icon.
